Brandon Rospond

From an early age, Brandon has had an active imagination, always thinking of stories and how to work elaborate ideas into his everyday life. That passion for storytelling evolved into reading, then narrative-driven video games, and then online roleplaying; the latter, where he worked on honing his writing craft by weaving nearly a fifteen year long campaign with other writers. He graduated from Monmouth University with a Bachelor’s degree in English and was honored to have also worked at Walt Disney World for nearly a year as a stockroom manager at Epcot.

Since Winged Hussar Publishing’s founding, Brandon has served as the main editor, helping to read over some of the early history works such as The Gaellic Wars and Frederick’s Orders. Upon branching out to Zmok and picking up fantasy and science-fiction series, Brandon became the head editor of that branch, and has since worked on series such as Beyond Antares, Tales of Mantica, The Great Martian War, City of the Old Gods, The Dragoon Clan, and countless other standalone works.

He currently resides in New Jersey with his loving wife, Annarose, where they are raising their sons, Xander and Leo, to be bookworms and gamers in training!

Mark Barber

Mark’s first venture into writing came with military history books for Osprey Publishing, focused on British aviation in the two world wars. This led onto working as a historical consultant and content writer for Gaijin Entertainment on ‘War Thunder’ for PC and Playstation. His first works in the wargaming industry were campaign books for Warlord Games’ Bolt Action, which included the Battle of the Bulge, the Battle of France, New Guinea, and two volumes on the Normandy campaign.

After working with some smaller franchises, Mark’s first novel for a mainstream wargaming IP was Steps to Deliverance, set in Mantic Games’ Kings of War universe. This spawned two sequels (Faith Aligned and Hero Falling), and a novel in the Kings of War Armada maritime setting - Pious. He also wrote Downfall, the opening WHP novel for Corvus Belli’s Infinity science fiction war-game.

Mark is currently working on sequels for Downfall and Pious, as well as for another major franchise which he’s not allowed to talk about yet!

Mark works in the aviation industry, collects bass and electric guitars, and talks about Final Fantasy VII with his editor far too much, which is why they both haven’t published more things.

Rob Burman

Rob Burman is a goblin addict - so it should probably come as no surprise that his first book for Winged Hussar/ZMOK Books should focus on these cunning greenskins. It all started with a copy of Heroquest received for Christmas in 1990. The heroes and monsters were quickly thrown aside in favor of painting the little goblins and orcs. There was something about the chaotic glee of the goblins that captured Rob’s attention and it quickly drove him to the likes of Warhammer Fantasy by Games Workshop and later into Kings of War by Mantic Games.

As a former journalist, Rob has worked on a number of a different publications, including a stint as a crime reporter on a local newspaper. Although Rob was meant to be writing about drug busts and court cases, it was the weirder stories that caught his imagination. He once spent 30 minutes chasing a ‘UFO”, only for it to be a giant advertising balloon that had broken free, went ghost hunting in a forest with a parapsychologist and tried to trap a ‘big cat’, which eventually turned out to be a greyhound. Arguably it might be his passion for sci-fi and fantasy fiction that drove him to sought out the weird and wonderful.

Rob has helped create a number of tabletop games, such as writing his own fantasy skirmish miniatures wargame, Kobolds and Cobblestones, developing the sci-fi arena game OverDrive and contributing to the development of Deadzone and Vanguard for Mantic Games. However throughout all these projects, particularly Kobolds and Cobblestones, Rob revelled in the opportunity to develop the background and write short pieces of fiction or character bios to help players immerse themselves in the setting. He continues to write small pieces of fiction to compliment new releases from Mantic Games.

On a personal level, Rob lives in Nottinghamshire, UK. He is married with two children and regularly forces them all to play tabletop games… with mixed results. You may also see him occasionally playing in Kings of War or Deadzone tournaments in the UK, where he will be typically wallowing on the bottom half of the table.

Craig Gallant

Ever since his grandparents bought him his first copy of The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe as a boy, Craig has been an avid reader. In high school, random blurbs were replaced with short stories written in worlds shared with his closest friends, culminating in his first novel, By Virtue of the Blood, finished while he was supposed to be writing his Master’s Thesis in grad school.

Over the last ten years, Craig has managed to parlay his love of fiction into an amazing reality. First writing short articles and stories for Spartan Games across their various game settings, and then moving on to write for Fantasy Flight Games in the Warhammer 40,000 and Star Wars settings, and finally laying the groundwork for their own world of Terrinoth for the game Rune Wars. Ultimately, Craig’s writing led him to Outlaw Publishing, where he wrote the foundational narratives for Wild West Exodus through articles, short stories, comic books, and ultimately, his first five professional novels.

Through the help of the publishing team at Zmok Books, Craig also crafts stories in worlds of his own creation. His science fiction novel, Legacy of Shadow, has been referred to as a 'buddy space opera', while his fantasy novel, Crimson Sand, Crimson Snow, explores a gritty world of fallen kingdoms, clashing cultures, and looming, unseen danger. Craig’s novel, Rise of the Alchemist, is the first in a shared magical-steampunk universe of alternate history, in a world where the America we know never came to be, replaced with the brutal, militaristic realm of Albion, founded by the arch-traitor Benedict Arnold, hell-bent on the total destruction of England and all her works.

In 2023, two of Craig's most recent novels see the light of day. Team Zed: Shell Game is his first story set in the Infinity Game universe, following a fledgling, ragtag mercenary team as it struggles to establish itself amidst harrowing galactic challenges. For Jamaica, in conjunction with the fantastic pirate game Blood and Plunder from Firelock Games, follows the exploits of the pirate brigantine Bonnie Kate as it steers a course through the bloody waters of Caribbean, fighting the rising presence of the Great Powers and established pirate bands both.

Craig looks forward to writing as many kinds of stories as he can for as long as the universe allows!

Rava.jpg

Giuseppe Rava

Giuseppe Rava was born in Faenza, Italy. Since he was a child, he loved history very much, especially military history. That mainly was due to the stories his father Tommaso told him about his experiences in the World War II. Instead, his passion for uniforms comes from his mother Giovanna, a tailor.

Giuseppe Rava expands his knowledge about history and warfare attending a wargame club. Thanks to dedicated books and magazines, he gets acquainted with military painters such as Detaille, Meissonier, De Neuville, Rochling, Ottenfeld and others. And he wished he could paint like them, some day. Self-taught, he was soon noticed by some publishers and he started with illustrating children's books. Now he usually works on historical subjects. Presently, Rava's illustrations are used by "ITALERI", "HAT INDUSTRIE", "HISTOIRE ET COLLECTIONS", "A CALL TO ARMS", "BACK FALCON PUBLICATION", "EDITRICE MILITARE ITALIANA", "ANDREA MINIATURES", "EMHAR".

Winged Hussar Publishing is proud to be the US distributor for Mr. Rava’s prints, as well as our collection of his prints in the artbook we produce.

Scott Washburn headshot.jpg

Scott Washburn

Scott Washburn has had a life-long interest in science fiction, fantasy, military history, and wargaming. So, it’s probably no surprise that his writing includes elements of those interests. You will find battles in nearly all of his stories and those battles will be realistic and adhere to sound military principles. But Scott is also a Civil War reenactor and that interest brought him face-to-face with the fact that battles are fought by people, not robots. Those people have hopes and dreams and emotions of their own. This comes out clearly in what Scott writes and the readers will find themselves fully involved with the characters and situations.

Prior to his retirement, Scott’s full-time job was as an architectural designer, he loves to build things. This also comes through clearly in his writings. The worlds and galaxies he sets his stories in are all constructed with solid architecture and engineering. They won’t fall down when put under stress.

Scott currently has twelve novels in print and another one due out this fall. His most successful books have been those in his Great Martian War series. This is a continuation of the classic “War of the Worlds” by H.G. Wells. After their first failed attempt to invade England, the Martians take precautions against Earthly diseases and try again. The humans haven’t been idle either, and they are prepared to give the Martians a real fight. A blend of alternate history, science fiction, and steampunk the stories include many historical characters and plenty of action.

Scott’s interest in wargames has led to the writing of another popular story, “Broken Alliance”. This story is set in Mantic Games's World of Pannithor and follows the Halfling faction in their Kings of War miniatures game. Scott is a fan of the game and many aspects of the novel are shaped by it.

Scott came rather late to the writing game, only starting to do so seriously in 1999 at age forty-four. Like most authors, it took him a while to find a publisher, but a happy chance led him to Winged Hussar and ZMOK Books and the rest, as the saying goes, is history.

On a personal level, Scott lives in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He is married with two daughters, a dog, and a cat.

REWaters2.jpg

Robert E. Waters

Robert E Waters has been writing stories most of his life, but his first sale came in 2003 with “The Assassins Retirement Party,” published in Weird Tales. Since then, he has sold over 80 short stories to online and print magazines and anthologies.

He’s also published eight novels, the most recent being 1637: THE TRANSYLVANIAN DECISION with the late Eric Flint, set in his 1632/Ring of Fire Alternate History series. He’s written several stories set in that series and a second co-authored novel, 1636: CALABAR’S WAR, with Charles E Gannon.

Robert grew up playing games, both board and computer, and his love of gaming landed him a job at the Avalon Hill Game Company in 1994 as Managing Editor of their quarterly magazine, The GENERAL. Later in that decade, he moved on to work in the computer gaming industry at such heralded places as Stanley Associates, Interactive Magic (contract work), and Talonsoft. For the past 23 years, he has worked at BreakAway Games helping design so-called “Serious Games,” games whose purpose is to help train doctors, nurses, med techs, and first-responders.

In the late 1980s, Robert was introduced to miniature wargaming, and he’s never looked back. From there, he tapped into the lush garden that is Games Workshop, buying almost everything that they sold: Warhammer Fantasy Battles, Warhammer 40k, Warmaster, Man-O-War, Blood Bowl, Mordheim, etc. It was only a matter of time before he would eventually gravitate to Mantic Games to find even more games to enjoy. Mantic’s DreadBall is his most favorite sports game of all time, and when Winged Hussar Publishing began publishing stories/novels set in Mantic’s myriad universes, he wrote his first Dreadball novel, THE LAST HURRAH. The sequel to that novel, THE FINAL RUSH, is pending.

Robert has written several short stories and novels for Winged Hussar Publishing, and he intends on doing so far into the future.
